TeenageEngineering PO, PO-16
TeenageEngineering PO, PO-16 Small enough to fit in your pocket and powered by a pair of AAA batteries, the Teenage Engineering PO-16 Factory Synthesizer features multiple real synthesizer engines including FM, subtractive synthesis, wave table, and physically modeled strings with 16 punch-in effects including delay, bit crusher, and filters. It also includes 16 punch-in arpeggio and chord playing styles. The punch-in play styles are a quick way to create melodies. The concept is to minimize the effort of entering a complete series of notes in a sequence by simply adding one or a few notes and then allowing the punch-in function to fill in variations of the notes that follow. The synthesizer parameters can be locked while an auto compressor and hardware limiter ensure adequate signal generation without clipping. A 16-step sequencer features 16 available patterns and up to 16 patterns can be chained together. An integrated clock and alarm clock expands the creative possibilities of the instrument. A jam sync function with 3.5mm audio in and out connections allows for multiple synthesizer units to be linked together. Using high-quality components with low power consumption, the synthesizer is cleverly designed with a Silabs EFM 32 Gecko CPU, a Cirrus Logic DAC, and a Knowles speaker placed under a novel animated LCD on a single circuit board. A fold-out stand makes it easier to play, and rear-panel speaker solder terminals allow you hook up the unit to a larger sound system.

Pocket Operators are powerful little game changers Teene Engineering’s Pocket Operators are a game changer. Period. My friend (now bandmate) turned me onto them. He has all three and after playing with each of them I decided to get myself the PO-16. Don’t be fooled by their size–these things are POWERFUL! They take a bit of fiddling around to get the hang of and really understand how they work but it becomes second nature once you get it. We hook all 4 together and just jam out for hours with them (and the rest of our equipment). As a…
Fun little lead synth better suited for musical “exploration” than formal composition The PO-16 Factory is my 3rd Pocket Operator, and I’m going to try to make it my last, though the combination of small size/low price does make it tempting to become a “collector”. The Factory is marketed as a lead synthesizer, but I also own the PO-20 Arcade and find that device to be a more complete product. Both of them have a very finite number of sounds they can produce, and actually, both of them end up sounding a “chiptune”. Still, for a $60 device, I’m comfortable with…
